Ammonia leak prompts hazmat response in Norwalk
NORWALK – Several streets were closed in Norwalk Wednesday due to an ammonia leak.
Norwalk police say the leak occurred at the Crystal Ice Company on Commerce Street around 4 p.m.
The department also sent out a tweet saying that the Norwalk Fire Department was on the scene and had the situation under control.
Fire officials say when they tested the air at the scene for ammonia, the levels did not register at levels for concern.
Officials say the ice-making company will be bringing in a mechanic to make sure their equipment is fixed.
“The system condenses ammonia to actually make ice and what happened is there must have been some type of over-pressure,” says Deputy Chief Al Bassett, of the Norwalk Fire Department. “The mechanic is in the process of evaluating that.”
Commerce Street was closed due to the response, but has since reopened.
